Installing Your Own Toilet Seat
Knowing how to install a new toilet seat is an important task especially for when your seat breaks, is worn out, or is stained. You can learn how to properly remove your current seat and replace it with a new one with help from Stephens Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning.
Supplies Needed
First and foremost, you must get the necessary supplies required to remove your current toilet seat as well as for installing the new one. These supplies include a flathead screwdriver, lubricating oil, a tape measure, pliers, a wrench, and a toilet seat kit.
Steps for Removing the Current Seat
In order to install your new toilet seat, you must remove the current one. It is a good idea to clean the area of the old seat before beginning the removal process. Follow these steps to remove the current seat.
Remove Bolt Caps and Bolts
The first step for removing your toilet seat involves removing the bolt caps and bolts. To do this, you must use the flathead screwdriver. If there aren’t any bolts, we recommend using a wrench to help loosen the nuts.
Use Lubrication for Easy Removal
If you are finding it difficult to remove the bolts, you may use lubricating oil to help with an easier removal process. Put some oil on the bolts and let it sit until you are ready to begin the process again.
Dispose of Old Pieces
When you are able to remove all of the bolts, the toilet seat should come right off along with the hinges. To make way for the new seat, you can dispose of all of the old pieces as they are longer needed or useful.
Clean Surface Area
Before installing the new seat, we recommend cleaning the area again. Make sure the toilet seat is sanitized as well as the hinges and toilet bowl.
Installing the New Seat
Now that you have successfully removed your old toilet seat, it’s time to install your brand new one! Follow these steps to get a brand new seat.
Align Hinges
Take the new seat and place it onto the bowl. The hinges should be already attached so that you can align them with where the old ones were.
Insert Bolts
Next, you need to place the bolts into the hinges with the head sticking up. The nut then goes on top of the bolt and can be tightened using the wrench.
Attach Bolt Caps
To ensure that the bolts stay in place and are secure, you can place bolt caps over them.
