Helpful Plumbing Tips When Celebrating Thanksgiving

Helpful Plumbing Tips When Celebrating Thanksgiving

Although it is only the first week of November, Thanksgiving will be here before we all know it! When it comes to celebrating Thanksgiving, there’s a lot that goes into planning: the food, guest list, decorations, activities; the list goes on. What many fail to include in their preparation is making sure the plumbing is functioning properly. Plumbing plays an important role in our everyday lives. For your holiday to be a success, follow these helpful tips from Stephens!

Be Wary of What Goes Into the Disposal

Knowing what can and can’t go into the garbage disposal is essential to know for everyday use, and especially on holidays. Thanksgiving meal prep often involves a lot of peeling and chopping. There may be scraps, leftover food waste, bones, and more that will need to be disposed of while cooking, and after everyone has finished their meal. To avoid a fiasco, you must be careful what goes down the disposal. On Thanksgiving, avoid placing any stringy vegetables as well as peelings, turkey bones, skin, and meat, eggshells, coffee grounds, grease, oil, and fats. If you are worried about waste accidentally going down, we recommend using a sink strainer.

Some Items Can’t Be Flushed

While many of us are aware that certain items should not be flushed down the toilet, others may not know. For those who don’t know, plumbing can be seriously damaged if not careful when flushing the toilet. It is important to remind family members and guests that bathroom napkins, tissue, cotton swabs, feminine hygiene products, and baby wipes should be thrown in the trash. People should also be careful to not use excessive amounts of toilet paper as this could also lead to a clog.

Ensure There Is Hot Water For All

With temperatures getting cooler, there’s nothing quite like taking a hot shower or bath. Depending on how many people are in your household, you may feel like you are competing for hot water. One way to ensure there is hot water is by turning up the heat on the water heater and asking individuals to wait approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the previous person has showered or bathed. It is also a good idea to invest in a tankless water heater. A tankless water heater is heated on demand in order to conserve energy.
