How to Celebrate World Plumbing Day
We all take plumbing for granted. We enjoy hot showers, fresh laundry, and clean drinking water without skipping a beat. Indoor plumbing may be part of your normal, everyday life but that’s not the case for everyone. Did you know that 2 million Americans don’t have access to basic indoor plumbing? And according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2.5 billion people across the world lack adequate plumbing and sanitation systems.
These plumbing deficits aren’t just inconvenient; they’re a serious public health problem. Indoor plumbing, including commercial plumbing, is responsible for maintaining healthy environments and slowing the spread of disease. Children are especially at risk. Because of improper sanitation and unsafe drinking water, approximately 700,000 children die each year. For this reason amongst others, plumbing literally saves lives.
In 2010, the World Plumbing Council (WPC) officially established March 11th as World Plumbing Day in order to recognize and appreciate the plumbers who make our societies so great. Here are some simple ways you can observe World Plumbing Day:
Count Your Blessings
It’s important to take a moment to realize how lucky you are to have indoor plumbing. You get to experience the comfort of a hot bath, the convenience of an indoor toilet, and the gift of clean drinking water. Self-reflection will make you feel grateful for what you have while also giving you the motivation to make the world better.
Thank Your Local Plumber
Having a local plumber on-hand is commonplace in most parts of America. You call them, they come out and fix your problem, and then everyone goes on with their life. Plumbers aren’t used to receiving the special appreciation that doctors or first responders may receive — but they are just as worthy! Your plumber is responsible for saving lives with the work that they do, too. So send them a thank you note or gift to make their day.
Donate to a Worthy Cause
Do your part to increase the world’s access to indoor plumbing, sanitation, and clean drinking water by donating to a worthy cause. Consider giving to an organization such as Plumbers Without Borders or The Water Project.
