Outdoor plumbing systems, while an amazing convenience, can also be a hassle when something goes wrong. Outdoor plumbing systems can be anything from a simple hose faucet to a septic tank system.

No matter what outdoor plumbing you have, it’s important to maintain them well, so issues don’t arise. Read on to learn some tips for maintaining your outdoor plumbing system.

Check Faucets Frequently

Most homes have some outdoor faucet, whether it’s for a hose or perhaps an outdoor sink. Turn these on and off occasionally to see if water is flowing properly. We recommend doing so once every few weeks.

If the water flow is irregular or barely flows, you may have a clog or a crack in the pipe. It is critical to have this checked out by a professional as soon as possible.

For those that live in a location where it gets very cold, it is also advised to winterize your pipes each year before the temperatures drop below freezing.

Clean Outdoor Drains

As inconvenient as it may be, cleaning outdoor drains, such as gutters, should be done regularly. Otherwise, they may become clogged and cause water damage to your property.

To clean outdoor drains, you need to check for the presence of leaves or other debris and remove it from the drains. This includes window wells.

Cleaning your drains at least twice per year or more is recommended if your property has a large tree that puts down a lot of leaves. If you clean your drain and notice it’s clogged, call a professional for help. These clogs can be hard to reach and difficult to clear so a professional is your best bet.

Schedule Septic System Maintenance

Having your septic tank regularly inspected will ensure it is working properly. Although the recommendations may differ from tank to tank, you generally need to have a septic tank inspected every three years.

Also, consider adding a treatment to your septic system every six months to help keep the system flowing properly. Many treatments include a general cleaner and chemical compounds to clear small blockages that may build up.

Check Filtration Systems

Many outdoor water appliances, such as a pool or a fountain, have filtration systems. If these filtration systems require a filter, they need to be changed regularly and cleared of any debris that has built up.

Additionally, clearing the debris in the water, such as leaves, prevents build-up, which can cause a clog that stops proper water flow through the filter.
