The Purpose of a Sump Pump
What is a sump pump and how does it work? A sump pump is a small pump that manages water levels, preventing flooding and water damage. It is typically located within the lowest part of a basement or crawl space. Groundwater flows into a sump pit. The sump pump then pumps the water out of the pit and away from the home, where it ends up in a storm drain.
Types of Sump Pumps
There are two main types of sump pumps which are pedestal pumps and submersible pumps. The motor of a pedestal pump is mounted above the sump basin, as it cannot get wet, while the submersible pump is inside of the sump basin.
Cleaning a Sump Pump
To ensure a sump pump is working properly, it is important to clean it often. Before beginning the cleaning process, you must first unplug the sump pump or make sure that the power is off. Avoid using any appliances that operate with water as the water could drain into the pit. We recommend wearing gloves when dealing with wastewater. You will also need a bucket and a plastic sheet. Now that you are ready to start, the first step is to disconnect the sump pump from the discharge pipe. Next, take the plastic sheet and wrap it around the pump. Take the pump outside to thoroughly clean with water and remove any debris. Once the pump is dry, bring it back to your basement or crawl space to reconnect it to the discharge pipe. Before reconnecting it, if you notice any standing water inside of the pit, it is important to remove it. Finally, your sump pump is clean and you can plug it back in. If you do not feel confident with cleaning your sump pump on your own, don’t hesitate to call us as we would be more than happy to assist you.
