Plumbing Issues You May Be Able to Solve on Your Own

Fixing Your Plumbing

Plumbing issues may arise unexpectedly and at inconvenient times. Luckily, there are some issues that can be solved without calling a plumber. Here are some examples of plumbing issues you may be able to fix on your own.

Clogged Garbage Disposal

When turned on, the function of a garbage disposal is to shred waste so that it is able to pass through the plumbing. When people put the wrong items into the disposal, a clog can occur. One should never put coffee grounds, egg shells, grease, oil, pasta, flour, rice, and thick vegetable and fruit peelings down the drain. If there appears to be a clog, there are ways to remove it on your own. It is important to turn off your garbage disposal before attempting to unclog it. You can use an Allen wrench to manually turn the blades to break down any debris. You may also use a plunger to pull up any clogged waste. In order for the plunging to work, it is important that you first fill your kitchen sink with water so that the plunger can stick easier. It goes without saying that you should never place your hand down the drain in order to fix the garbage disposal, due to the danger the blades pose. Always use a tool and should that not do the trick, contact Stephens for more professional help.

Low Water Pressure

Water pressure can be affected by a buildup of mineral deposits. You can experience low water pressure when washing your hands in the sink or taking a shower. To fix the water pressure and remove the buildup, you can soak the faucet or showerhead in white vinegar. It is also recommended to remove the faucet aerator or showerhead to be able to thoroughly clean the inside as well.

A Slow Draining Bathtub

If you notice it is taking quite a bit of time for your bathtub to drain, there is most likely a clog. Bathtub drains can get clogged with hair, soap scum, hard water, dirt, and more. To remove the clog, you can pour ½ cup of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar down the drain. After letting the solution sit for a few minutes, turn on the hot water. If water is still draining slowly, you can use a plunger or a plumber’s snake.
