Straight answers from Stephens Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning on how long a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner lasts and how to read a CIPP warranty. Can't find your answer? Call us or send a message.
CIPP Lining Lifespan
CIPP lining is designed for a 50-year service life, and EPA testing of liners up to 25 years old turned up no reason to doubt that figure. CIPP lining installs a resin-saturated tube inside your existing sewer pipe and cures it into a new, jointless pipe. You can follow each step in our guide to how CIPP pipe lining works.
In its 2012 report (EPA/600/R-12/004), the U.S. EPA tested four liners taken from sewers in Denver and Columbus. They had been in service for 5, 21, 22, and 25 years. The study also cautioned that long-term performance may not be assured, especially when installation and inspection steps are skipped.
The 50-year figure is a design life: engineers size a liner's wall thickness to carry soil and groundwater loads for 50 years, with a safety margin built in. A design life is an engineering target, not a promise that every liner lasts exactly 50 years.
ASTM F1216, the ASTM International standard for lining a pipe by inverting a resin-soaked tube, includes a design method for sizing the liner wall. NASSCO, the National Association of Sewer Service Companies, calls for CIPP designed for a life of 50 years or greater.
A liner's lifespan depends most on three installation factors: how well the old pipe is cleaned, whether the resin fully cures, and whether the liner is sized and reconnected correctly. Tree roots, mineral scale, and debris left in the host pipe, which is your original sewer line, can create weak spots in the liner. Under-cured resin never reaches the strength it was designed for. A liner sized to fit stays tight against the pipe wall, and side connections must be reopened cleanly.
We start with the pipe itself. Before we price anything, Sebastian runs a camera down the line. If the pipe can be lined, we won't quote you a full replacement. That is our Repair over Replace approach. See what a drain camera inspection reveals.

CIPP Lining Warranty Questions
Your quote should spell out the warranty before any work starts.
A CIPP lining warranty is the installer's written promise to repair defects in the work for a set number of years. A good one names what counts as a defect, which section of pipe is covered, and when the clock starts. It also lists what is left out, because a warranty on the lined section does not protect pipe that was never lined. See the full scope of our sewer line services.
Ask us for the warranty terms on your project when you request your free estimate. Your full-price quote comes in writing before any work begins, so you can compare bids.
Some CIPP warranties transfer to the next owner and some do not, so ask before you sign. Documented repairs give buyers and inspectors clear paperwork during escrow. Keep your quote, warranty paperwork, and inspection report with your home records.
A CIPP warranty covers the installer's commitment to repair defects, while the 50-year lifespan is an engineering design target, so the two numbers measure different things. We call this the Two-Number Rule: every CIPP lining quote should state the design life and the warranty term as two separate numbers.
A Worcester Public Schools bid specification in Massachusetts assumes a 50-year design life for sewer liners yet requires a 3-year contractor guarantee. Riviera Utilities requires a 5-year warranty on liner installations. A quote that promises a 50-year guarantee deserves a close read of what is actually written.
Stephens Plumbing runs a final camera inspection after the liner cures, walks you through what the camera shows, and gives you an inspection report. The camera travels the full length of the new pipe to check for wrinkles, folds, and missed side connections.
If the camera shows a problem outside the lined section, we tell you and price the right repair. Our guide to sewer line repair costs shows what to expect.
Key Takeaways
CIPP lining is designed for a 50-year service life, and EPA testing of liners up to 25 years old turned up no reason to doubt that figure.
A 50-year design life is an engineering target, not a guarantee. How carefully the liner is installed decides how long it really lasts.
Design life and warranty are two different numbers. The public bid specifications cited above require 3 to 5 years of warranty coverage.
Ask for warranty terms in writing before you sign: what is covered, which pipe, for how long, and whether it transfers to a new owner.
Stephens Plumbing runs a camera inspection before pricing and a final one after the liner cures, and every free estimate comes with an upfront quote.
