A clogged toilet is one of those household hiccups that always seems to happen at the worst possible time. And while having a plunger nearby is the simplest solution, life isn’t always that easy. The good news? There are several tried-and-true methods you can use in a pinch for unclogging a toilet without a plunger, and we’ve rounded up the top five.

Wait It Out

Sometimes patience with your bathroom’s plumbing is all it takes. Many clogs are caused by too much toilet paper or organic matter. But with time, both of those soften and break down. If the water in the bowl is slowly draining, give it 20-30 minutes. You may find that the blockage clears on its own with no effort on your part. Just be careful not to flush again too soon, or you could risk an overflow.

Use Hot Water and Dish Soap

If waiting doesn’t do the trick, hot water and dish soap are your next best bet. Add a generous squirt of dish soap into the toilet bowl before carefully pouring a bucket of hot water (but not boiling!) into the toilet. The combination of soap and water can help break down greasy buildup and loosen whatever is causing the clog. Give it 10-15 minutes before trying another flush.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

This natural cleaning combo can work wonders on a stubborn clog. To start, pour one cup of baking soda into the bowl. Then, slowly add two cups of vinegar. The fizzing reaction helps break apart debris and get it moving through the pipes. Let it sit for about half an hour before flushing with hot water. Not only is this method effective, but it’s also safe for your plumbing system.

Use a Wire Hanger or Toilet Brush

Desperate and running out of options? If the clog is close to the surface, you may be able to break it apart physically. Try to do so by straightening a wire hanger (leaving a small hook on the end) and carefully inserting it into the toilet bowl. Gently push and twist to dislodge the blockage. Don’t have a hanger handy? You can try using the handle end of your toilet brush in the same way–just be careful not to scratch the porcelain.

Call a Pro

The backup still won’t budge? If your toilet won’t unclog, it’s time to call in the experts, especially since a stubborn clog could indicate a more serious issue deeper in your plumbing system. At Stephens, we offer fast, reliable service backed by our satisfaction guarantee, and we can make quick work of that stubborn clog. And because blockages never happen at a convenient time, we’re available 24/7 for emergencies.

A Word of Warning

These at-home DIY tricks for unclogging a toilet can often solve minor clogs, but don’t push it too far. If you notice frequent backups, foul odors, or slow drains throughout your property, the problem might be in your sewer line, not just the toilet. That’s a job for licensed professionals, and the sooner it’s addressed, the better.
